Lonewolf 2011 Dallas TX
I took a pretty tough HE list. The basic plan was to get the White Lions into combat for anything they could tear up and let magic and shooting do the rest. They also had a cool new twist called Texas Sized Victory. There were 20 Victory points available, 4 Scenario points and 16 Battle points per game. You won if you beat your opponent by 100 pts but if you didn’t win by 500 pts (everything is bigger and better in Texas!) you had to give 2 of your VP to your opponent. Thus encouraging more carnage!
My List
Lords
Prince – General, Great Weapon, Armour of Caledor, Vambraces of Defense, The Amulet of Light
Archmage – High Magic, Lvl 4, Staff of Solidity, Talisman of Saphery, Folariath's Robe
Heroes
Noble – BSB, Dragon Armour, Shield, Banner of the World Dragon
Mage – High Magic, Lvl 1, Dispel Scroll
Mage – Lore of Metal, Lvl 2, Ring of Corin
Core
Archers (20) – Full Command, Banner of Eternal Flame
Archers (20) - Hawkeye, Mus
Archers (12) - Mus
Special
White Lions of Chrace (40) - The Skeinsliver, Razor Standard, 45
Rare
2 x Great Eagles
Game 1
Shane Couch HE (DFW)
Scenario - The Lone Ranger: One model from highest point cost per model unit of 3 or more becomes the Lone Ranger that had to run solo. Kill or do more wounds. Mine was a White Lion his was a Silver Hel which also gave him 1 more wound than mine. If I killed his I would win the 4 Objective Points
He had a big block of like 50 Lothern Seaguard, ~15 White Lions and ~15 Phoenix Guard, 10 Silver helms, chariot, Bolt Thrower, Couple Mages and a BSB with Banner of Sorcery
If you have ever had a game where everything worked as designed, this was one of two for me. I hid my Lone Ranger deep in a forest near my edge never planning to use him. He did not take the same tactic and I put 2 wounds on him with archers and finished him off with Fury of Kaine. For some reason he charged head long into the 39 White Lions with a depleted Silver Helm Unit. I killed them then charged his White Lions in the Side and killed them. Meanwhile his Chariot took out a block of my archers but took a few wounds. I turned my White Lions around and ran for the Lothern Seaguard. About that time I finally manage to Vaul’s Unmake his banner of Sorcery and reduce the risk of him casting something bad on me. To mop up I destroyed the Lothern Seaguard, all its characters and the bolt thrower behind it, while pounding his remaining chariot and Phoenix Guard.
Win Texas Sized Victory (full 16 points) + 4 Pts for killing his Lone Ranger while keeping mine alive.
Game 2
Greg Harris (1st Overall General) – Lizardmen (DFW)
Scenario - Six Flags over Texas: This game gave you Six Flags (one for each of the flags that has flown over Texas) each with a unique ability. They could be given to any unit, even those that didn’t have or couldn’t even have a banner like Great Eagles! Each could only be used once. Only two really came into play, one for each of us. The goal was to control more of the Six flags banners at the end.
Tooled up Slaan (Lore of Metal), Scar Vet, 30 Sauruses, Engine of the Gods, 30 Skinks with 3 Krox, 20 Skinks with 3 Krox, 10 and 9 Chameleons, 2x 1 Salamander Packs, 4 Terradons.
This game just gives me great heartache as it was mine for the taking and I totally screwed up! I thought things were going really bad when on Turn one he uses his Spanish flag on a Salamander Triple marching them and roasted 15 White Lions on turn one. He also cast something that killed my metal mage and put a big dent in my Great Eagles and Archers all before I had a turn. Luckily I took the America Flag on my White lion that allowed me to get back D3x100 points of White Lions back, I was full strength and charged his Saurus/Slann unit. This is where I lost the game, Instead of either accepting the challenge from my General who had MAGICAL attacks or declining and getting tons of MAGICAL White Lion attacks on the Slann and most likely killing him, I did the dumbest thing possible and accepted with my Archmage that nullified magical attacks and could only be hit by magical attacks and had no attacks (great for a killy lord, terrible for a Slann!). This left his high leadership and BSB intact. Eventually I was hit in each side flank with a Stegadon and a unit of Skinks with 3 Kroxigors. It didn’t go well after that and I got tabled.
Loss Texas Sized Loss (4 points) + 0 Pts for Six flags banners.
Game 3
Jaun Corujo TK (DFW)
Scenario – Texas Two Step: Each player nominated a less than 400 point, it gains devastating charge and if it finds the dance partner on the battle field and neither side flees they switch sides. Objective was to get more units of 5 or more models in the opp deployment zone.
King in Chariot, Hirophant on Casket, Liche, Icon Bearer, Screaming Skull Catapult (no SoF), 18 Tomb Guard, 10 Heavy Cav, 3 Chariots, 3 Ushabti, Scorpion, and a couple of Carrion
This was a case of being over confident, making mistakes, and getting lucky. He sent his King, Chariots, Scorpions and Carrion into one of my units of Archers. Of course I forgot to take my Lv 2 mage out of the unit before they were devastated by all this and he dies with Archers and a Great Eagle. I march my White Lions right for his Tomb Guard, Bone Giant, Ushabi, and Casket with Hirophant. On the other side I shot up his Dance partner unit Heavy Cav with the Icon Bearer and they tried to get to my Dance partner Archers. Then his King tried to urgency his unit into my other archers, who had not taken out the Mage either!!!! I threw 1 dice forgetting 1 OR 2 failed and he chewed up that unit too. He ran his Bone Giant and Ushabti away from the White Lions but couldn’t get his Tomb Guard away fast enough. I killed his Icon Bearer but then that unit was crushed by the Kings Chariot unit. On the last turn I massacred the Tomb Guard and over ran into the Hirophant and killed him and the Casket as well as the Carrion that crumbled from that to end the game. The Tomb Guard, Hirophant and Banners and BSB I got on the last turn barely won the game I had thought I had in the bag already.
Win No Texas Sized Victory (14 points) + 4 Pts for dancing in his deployment zone with White Lions
Game 4
Karl Jones new O&G (DFW)
Scenario – Fire the Coach: This one was very complex. You could nominate a model of less than 400 pts to be Jerry Jones. You could nullify a round of wounds to Jerry if you killed off a unit and models of equal value which count as dead. Neither of us did this.
Big Boss on Waveryn, Black Orc Boss BSB, Lv4 Gobo Shaman, Big unit of Black Orcs 2 choppas, Big unit of Night Gobos with nets, Arachnarok (plain), 10 Savage Orc Boar Boyz, unit of 2 Wolf chariots and a unit of Boys 2 H/W Shield.
I named my General my Jerry Jones, he named his General his Jerry Jones. In this game my opponent had the General, Arachnarok, Savage Boar Boys and Black Orcs on one side and the Chariots, NG and Boyz on the other side. Putting my eagle in the middle of the Boyz and NG seem to paralyze them for some reason, I was only trying to march block them. On the other side the General and Arachnarok went wide in a flanking maneuver, but his BO turned away from me for some reason. I proceeded to march out in White Lions the middle of the battlefield, took a charge from the Chariots and killed them and reformed to face the highest points (Gen, SOBB, BO) while peppering everything with shooting and magic. Then he squabbled with the Savage Orc Boar Boyz and I was able to flank and massacre them on the charge and over run into the General. I immediately challenged with my Archmage to negate all the high strength attacks and thunder stomps. He charged my side flank with the BOs but I killed his BSB with directed attacks from my general as well as dice up the unit pretty good. On my turn I charged the General in the side flank with my Great Eagle even though he couldn’t fight I still got the +2 combat res (Charge and Flank) and broke the units. But I couldn’t catch the General with the Eagle or the BO with the White Lions. Unfortunately killing the General (Jerry Jones) was the bonus. One of my archers took a animosity charge from the reduced NG block and broke them and ran them down after a turn. The BOs fled off the table and I gave up 1 unit of archers from Terror and the small archers unit and a mage to the Arachnarok
Win Texas Sized Victory (16 points) + 0 Pts For not running down his Jerry Jones with Great Eagle!!!
Gmae 5
David Caldwell Empire (DFW)
Scenario – Texas Hold ‘Em: This had 8 individual objectives, each taking turns until all were chosen, it’s the only Scenario that not all or nothing in the Tournament, Helps sort out the players and use less tiebreakers. Things like Kill the General, have more flags, more table quarters etc. keep cheapest unit alive, etc
Arch lector on Alter with +3 STR, Ench Shield, Dragon Bane Gem, and speculum, Mounted Priest, Priest on foot, Lv 2 Light Wizard with Rod of Power, 5 x 5 Knights, 10 Knights, 2x 20 Spearmen, 2x Cannons, Mortar, 2 x Steam Tanks
This was a nightmare matchup and I even considered giving a bad game based on the build. With a +2 to me he still got to go first but didn’t’ really hit much with the war machines. Then I did something high risk that failed. Facing a block of 2 Stanks and War Alter with a 5 man Knight unit in front of it I charged out at the knights with the Archmage hoping to make the Knights run and redirect into a Stank taking it out of the game for a while. But I rolled low. Then to make it worse instead of sliding back I moved out the White Lions to protect the Archmage and got charge by the Stanks and Alter. He magic defense was very high and it took 3 attempts at Vuals to destroy the Speculum and several more turns to kill the Arch Lector. But the writing was on the wall and I eventually got tabled. I need to just line up back and pepper him with magic and shooting and hope for the best.
Loss Texas Sized Loss (4 points) + 1 Pts for killing the general.
Super turn out with 87 players! Overall I had a blast as usual at this event, every guy I played was from the DFW area and I only had faced one or two them in a game before.. I could kick myself for not taking advantage of the gift against the Lizardmen player and eventual best general but c'est la vie!. I had no answers for the overpowering Empire list and might have had a draw at best if I played perfect or got lucky. I had 5 great games but I did get a bad game vote against the TK player, apparently teaching him how to play his TK’s correctly (I also have TKs and was right every time) was frowned upon by him. In the end II finished 38th out of 87 for Best General with a 3 Wins and 2 Losses, since I wasn’t finished painting I wasn’t even close for Overall. My Roomie for the Trip Davy Calkins was kind enough to stay one table behind me for Rounds 3-5 which was fun. His Dwarves ended up 4 wins and 1 loss and getting the top Dwarf General award and placed 9th overall at only his second IGT!
