Today I played in my first singles tournament. I used my Beastmen and it was the first three games with them. I had a draw with Empire the first game. 35 points separated our victory points. My Minotaurs were absolutely disturbing in close combat.
Second game was a loss. I got my butt handed to me by skaven. It was the 3rd round that killed me... I had some horrible rolls and my general fled from a charge and didn't rally until turn 4. The loss of my leadership and my spells really hurt. No biggie I still had a blast. My opponent that game happened to be Joe Flesh from Waagh! cast. He was fun to play. To be honest the game was so good I wasn't paying attention to how many things were dying or victory points. That game is why I play Warhammer.
Third game I played an O&G player. I felt sorry for the guy from before the game started. My main army is O&G so I know how they tick and was able to diss assemble them in short order. I was in combat turn 2 and by the end of turn three he only had 381 points of 1250 left on the board. I lost 80 the whole game.
If I were to review the Beastmen army I would say this, Core units are good with a 4 WS and 4 T. With the 2 hand weapon option it gives them a decent amount of attacks. Alone they arent going to do much but with the other core units like chariots and the ability to buff with Lore of Beasts they become disturbingly good. Mix all that with primal fury and they are astounding. Primal fury is a leadership check that allows you to get hatred every round. This army is all about synergy and your ability to recognize and utilize these unit combos.
Minotaurs are a wonderful unit. My Bloodkine has 5 attacks with an additional hand weapon. Add in frenzy and bloodgreed and you become a combat beast as a champion. My Gorbull also did very well. he stayed alive all three games and made back his points and more.
There was one round that my bloodkin had 8 attacks at str 6. I really felt bad for the O&G player that turn!
