Hello Everyone,
I just signed up for the forums and figured I’d take a minute to introduce myself.
Growing up in a small town in central Ohio, there wasn’t a whole lot to do, so naturally rainy days were torture until my friends started gaming. The gaming addiction started for me around 6th grade when I got into Magic the Gathering. It wasn’t until 7th Grade that I started Warhammer 40k. My first army was Blood Angels (space marines of course for the 13 year old) and as with most kids that age, I wasn’t really interested in the hobby aspect; I just wanted to buy as many toys as I could and wipe the floor with everyone else.
40k and Magic alternated as my primary games and I ended up collecting a Nurgle Chaos Space Marine Army (complete with Plague Bearers, Nurglings and a Great Unclean One). When I moved down to NC for college, I finally started becoming slightly more interested in the hobby aspect of gaming and started converting and painting my minis. It wasn’t until I was about 20 or so that someone from the local game store explained to me that 40k was for babies and Fantasy was where it was at.
Curious about Fantasy, I poured over my three year back-log of White Dwarfs to read all of the WHFB articles I had skipped in lieu of shiny tanks and shooty guns. I happened upon a 3000 point battle report between O&G and Dwarfs where Gork’s Warpath literally stomped all over the stunties. After reading about these crazy green skins who would just as soon bicker amongst each other as fight the enemy, push whirling fanatics through their ranks and blow up spectacularly when trying to cast spells, I knew I was in love. 6th Edition Night Goblins were definitely for me.
Sadly, the feelings were not reciprocated. The Dark Elves, Dwarfs, High Elves and Empire that my friends were playing walked all over my 300 man leadership 6 army and eventually I lost interest in the game.
It wasn’t until Storm of Chaos came out that my interest was renewed. Rat Assassins? Seriously? With a Fell Blade? I Skitterleaped (Skitterlept?) myself into a new race. These guys were far more competitive (though not much more brave) than the gobbos I had been fielding. My group was still a long ways away from using any sort of tactics; most of our games were a matter of pushing our units towards each other until someone removed all of their men (we didn’t have a maximum number of turns).
As is the case with any hobby, attention waxes and wanes and my group found ourselves turning back to Magic Cards over warhammer again.
Then the Daemons came out. By that time, I believe the Storm of Chaos armies were no longer considered legal (I feel so back for all the players who bought slayer armies) so my rats were collecting dust quite nicely. When I saw that Daemons were a viable option, I broke out my models from 40k, rebased them, and started building a Nurgle Army. One metric ton of pewter later, and a hell of a lot of Dry Brushing, I had a full army that has been poisoning the old world for the last few years.
Since then, I’ve renewed my Skaven (a couple of Battalions and Islands of Bloods, plus a few extra goodies), though building and painting 300+ models is a daunting task.
Most of my gaming time has been updating my Nurgle army to 8th ed standards and getting them painted and ready for the Brawler Bash in April. Once I get those finished, I’ll be building and painting the Skaven one unit at a time (so far I’ve got a Doomwheel and a unit of Giant Rats finished).
Wow, now that I’ve written my life story, I’ll be impressed if you’ve made it to the end of this post. Kudos for making it this far without getting bored and wandering off.
I’ve really enjoyed the podcast, as it’s great to get a local take on gaming. Keep up the great work, and I definitely appreciate all the work you’re putting into the Bash this year.
