Hey, I don't know if anyone else is planning on doing 'Ard Boyz the weekend after BB but I was looking at the scenarios. Is it just me, or does it seem like the person with the largest blocks of strong infantry, preferably core are going to be the likely winners? Shooting is nerfed 1/2 games out of 3, depending on whats rolled in scenario 3. Magic will have some effect, but it doesn't look like its really been affected either way except for occasional line of sight or frenzy problems. Close Combat seems to have been very much favored over everything else, with smaller sight distances in game 1, the bloody choppa in game 2, and the desire to be nowhere near a small unit when lightning strikes in game 3 and the chance to be frenzied/stubborn.
Metagamewise I don't think many people will bring much shooting but a number of people will probably bring large monsters to support their infantry, hoping to survive a single lightning strike before getting in to combat.... Nope, I take that back after rereading the lightning strike in game 3, it doesn't matter if you are in combat or not, you still get hit. So, I can't imagine now, anyone bringing anything but large masses of infantry. Probably with casters bunkered up in a slightly smaller infantry bunker casting buffs or debuffs that aren't affected by LOS. Am I analyzing this incorrectly? -Ken

That doesn't sound all that fantastic to me.
Do you have a link to the 'Ard Boyz info?

Sounds like WOC and Lizardmen will have it easy then. I'd be looking to Lore of Metal for this as you know that everyone and their mother is doing WOC now.

I didn't know much about Ard Boyz and after reading about it, I am unimpressed. I understand what GW is doing but the hobby is much more to me. I like what GTs have to offer, more than Ard Boyz imo.

@chris M. Are you seeing lots of WOC in your area? I've always been told that they are a second tier army. I play them and enjoy them, but don't run into more then maybe one other person at an RTT that plays them. How many people in your area play them? Is it a proactive or reactive response to other armies that are played over there? Or is it just personal preference? Thanks. -Ken

Ken with such a huge advantage going in, you might be able to win a game.

I wouldn't say that the last round gives penalties to shooting more than it does any other list. One of the options is your moving and charging is reduced. That pretty much means shooting is more important if that is rolled. So, I think that both close combat and missile troops are nerfed in the last round. I think the idea of lighting in the last round will pretty much negate MSU armies or too many small units of skinks or fast cav. I think it will make people tend towards bigger units. It won't necessarily make everyone take only huge units, though. I still think a medium sized mediocre unit in the flank of anyone will hurt them. War machines will be screwed if lighting strikes. Still, they are so useful that people will risk them. The Blood Choppa scenario can help elites as much as it can help hordes. I think it's all situational. kenstubbs: WoC a 2nd tier army? That's not been my experience. It can be quite hard to deal with blocks of Chaos Warriors and as many War Shrines as you can stuff in an army. Most people take Tzeentch and end up with absurd ward saves. Gateway spell is WoC, right? That's still nasty, especially if everyone is going big blocks.

I think the HE army with Teclis with a giant unit of archers with the BSB with the World Banner in the folding tower will dominate again this year. Can you say Dweller's paluza! Throw in some chariots and eagles and a big block of something and you are playing for a draw at best.
Although I thought there was special rule with garrisoning buildings and frenzy that might affect scenario #3. But if not I'm not too worried about a re roll-able LD 10.

Thanks. -Ken I live around Chris and can say that we see a lot of WoC armies around here. Different WoC armies have won most (if not all..) of the major tournaments in the IL/WI/MN area since the start of 8th edition. I know people are always wondering about the "top tier" armies, and since we have a solid amount of tournament data with 8th edition rules in place it has become more clear. Just taking a look at the 20 most recent US tournaments on RankingsHQ, there is a definite pattern with the armies that are winning: 5 WoC champions 5 DoC champions 5 Lizardmen champions 1 of each of the following - Skaven, DE, O&G, Beastmen, VC Just looking at this small sample of data, you have to think WoC, Lizardmen, and DoC (still! ) are top tier armies.
